Thanksgiving Day Proclamation of 1789

WebNote from Linda: I will be offline due to travel for Thanksgiving. If your comments go into moderation, please be patient – I will OK them asap. Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Thanksgiving Day Proclamation of 1789
by President George Washington

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor, and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanks giving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many single favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the Service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks, for His kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the single and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of His providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, of the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have to acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge and in general for all the great and various favors which He hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humble offering our prayers and supplications to the Great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all people, by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone know to be best.

“My God”, said the Benedictine educated historian, “it’s true, the Jesuits do attempt to educate fools like Pat Buchanan!”

You’re an ass. It’s pretty simple. Saw you on CSpan touting your book. “Hitler, Churchill lalala”. Man, you are dangerous and people believe you???? I’ve heard of Jesuits picking up desks and throwing them at students. How did you survive your education? Ahhhh, baffled them with your buffoonery. Gottcha. Say what you want, you’re the dinosaur; a filthy rich, stupid, well reasoned (based on what you want to hear and think and justify in your research) and a dangerous man. Footnotes and citations my ass.

God help us. That Jesuit priest that wanted to throw you off the balcony was unfortunately a man of faith. Faith, that he could educate enough people to laugh at your silliness. Oh, how I wish it were so……

You’d have been laughed out at a Benedictine school. Too bad; survived certain death under the Jesuits and not humiliated by the Benedictines. You lead a charmed life it seems.

Regarding comments left by “abovethefray”. It really is embarrassing when spoiled little college flunkies attempt to belittle someone while they only show their inept abilities to even belittle themselves. You seem to feel America is your little playground to post your blog while bragging to your friends about how you gave it to ‘ol Pat, yes ser re Bob. Pat Buchanan was more accomplished and trusted with more than you ever will be when he was 30 years old. What really riles you up is when the topic pans to religeon. You come unglued. It was a believer in Jesus Christ, George Washington, who proclaimed the day of Thanksgiving to God…not the Pilgrims thanking the Indians. It was the least Godly of our Founders, Jefferson who “canceled” the day of Thanksgiving and a believer in Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln who reinstated it. To you it is a paid day off in your morasse but to others it does actually mean something.

Your ignorance exceeds your inability to articulate. Please, rebel against your parents or spouse, not God. The consequences are much more dire and permanent. You do know your rebellion is against the one who made you, and you must be pretty angry about it for some reason.

This is a wonderful website, this Thanksgiving message will be perfect to read at Thanksgiving for all my conservative and especially liberal children.
    Thank you

Mr. Buchanan, Thank you for the George Washington address. Washington writes with the same conciseness and precision as can be found in the Constitution.

I also watched your C-span presentation, and I think, that if someone looks at one of Winston Churchill’s paintings, they are looking at the work of a drunk man, and, many books were published under the authorship of Winston Chruchill, but I think they were all ghost written, and I think a reader can almost tell the different writers as the chapters of Churchill’s books advance.

Also, I went to a Jesuit HS and the Jesuits were hands down, the most civilized and best mannered people I have ever met.

  • TreyHancock

    Mr. Buchanan,
Your comment about “…a collapsing culture and vanishing peoples…” is a scarey prospect. I think that the following applies…

“Of all the problems that our nation has been embroiled in; there are 10 foundational things that we have disregarded as Americans which have compromised who and what we are as a sovereign nation. These ‘disregarded’ things are the basis of every single, minute problem that we now face as ‘a people.’ ”

1.)”…have no other gods before me.”
2.)”You shall not make for yourself an idol…”
3.)”You shall not misuse the name of the LORD
    your God…”
4.)”Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.”
5.)”Honor you father and your mother…”
    6.)”You shall not murder.”
    7.)”You shall not commit adultery.”
    8.)”You shall not steal.”
9.)”You shall not give false testimony…”
    10.)”You shall not covet…”

I have tried to think this through! There is not one single area in our national existance that is not affected by the “10″ addressed here.

  • Fran

    That was pretty good TreyHancock.

Re: reminiscence of a religious upbringing.

I have not been perfect in my life but I try to follow the words you posted. Having been raised in a Catholic School, all those Latin and bible classes first thing in the morning, all those masses we were “forced” to attend, and all the charity drives for the little starving children overseas helped me to be (what I consider) an “adequate” moral individual. For this, I am thankful.

Catholic grammar school was not easy. Among other things, I remember one time while in class, I walked down the aisle and accidentally knocked over an open bottle of ink that was sitting too close to a students’ desk corner. I spent five hours (with the student who had the open bottle of ink) on my knees sopping up and scrubbing the damage on the hardwood floors in front of each successful class past mine that day. By the time I finished, my knees were stinging red and almost bleeding but that was nothing compared to the jeers and laughter of some students watching us clean up the mess. Sister Nazaretta, like the Gestapo, stood over us with “glee” as that was fitting punishment for our clumsiness and NOT FOLLOWING STRICT RULES regarding ink and ink wells. In the future I steered clear of Sister Nazareta (she was as ugly as her name) and stayed in my seat during classes. God forbid I should have to use the bathroom!

That was a long time ago and my bittersweet memories still remain. Life has good and bad lessons which are learned when you are young from parents, teachers and elders who mold and make people into what and who they are as adults. A lot of our children are not being taught the important lessons in life (not necessarily as I describe above) There has been much lost over the years, sadly, in this respect

As Thanksgiving approaches, there is so much to be grateful for as I have nice friends, a good spouse, food on the table, money in my pocket, get a good feeling when I give something to charitable causes , look ahead with hope for the future for ourselves and our country and more importantly, can complain and also give my constructive viewpoints when necessary, right here on Pat’s website. My hope is that we all share these “little” things in life. What more could anyone ask for!!!!

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!

  • Let us remember the unborn at thanksgiving.

This country desperately needs a good depression to slap it silly, and take the air out of our profligate sails. America has become America The Stupid.

The country is broke, so what do the Liberals do? Give away more of our money to the corrupt U.N. and make it LAW!

We get what we deserve, and boy, are we going to get it now!

Bush I, Clinton and Bush II and the Neo-Republicans were bad enough, but with raving Liberals in charge of everything now, we are going to see a depression much sooner than I expected. Prepare for it NOW! Prepare for it yesterday! I have been doing this for years, myself.

What’s more, the Liberals will hasten the day a nuclear bomb destroys New York City. Sensing weakness, the Islamofascists are back on the offensive. The Liberals will now appease and strengthen their hand, will release the terrorists at Gitmo into our heartland and cities.

SENATE BILL S. 2433 THE GLOBAL POVERTY ACT

This bill, sponsored by none other than Sen. Barack Obama, with the backing of Joe Biden on the Foreign Relations Committee, and liberal democrats in Congress, is nothing short of a massive giveaway of American wealth around the world, and a betrayal of the public trust, because, if passed, this bill would give over many aspects of our sovereignty to the United Nations.

The noble sounding name of this bill, ‘The Global Poverty Act’ is actually a Global Tax, payable to the United Nations, that will be required of all American taxpayers. If passed in the Senate, the House has already passed it, this bill would require the U.S. to increase our foreign aid by $65 BILLION per year, or $845 BILLION over the next 13 years! That’s on top of the billions of dollars in foreign aid we already pay out!

In addition to the economic burdens this potential law would place on our precarious economy, the bill, if passed in the Senate, would also endanger our constitutionally protected rights and freedoms by obligating us to meet certain United Nations mandates.

According to Senator Obama, we should establish these United Nations’ goals as benchmarks for U.S. spending. What are they?”

¥ The creation of a U.N. International Criminal Court having the power to try and convict American citizens and soldiers without any protection from the U.S. Constitution.

¥ A standing United Nations Army forcing U.S. soldiers to serve under U.N. command.

¥ A Gun Ban on all small arms and light weapons –which would repeal our Second Amendment right to bear arms.

¥ The ratification of the ‘ Kyoto ‘ global warming treaty and numerous other anti-American measures.

“Recently, the Senate Subcommittee on Foreign Relations (where Sen. Joe Biden sits) approved this plan by a voice vote without any discussion! Why all the secrecy? If Senators Obama and Biden are so proud of this legislation, then why don’t they bring it out into the light of day and let the American people have a look at it instead of hiding it behind closed doors and sneaking it through Congress for late night votes.

It may be only a matter of time before this dangerous legislation reaches a floor vote in the full body of the Senate.

Check it out for yourself, there: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/110-s24

It doesn’t matter since it has already been predicted that America will become an undeveloped Nation by 2012. This prediction was made by Gerald Celente CEO of the Trends Research Institute.

This is the man how accurately predicted these past events. The 1987 Stock Market Crash, The Fall of the Soviet Union, The 1997 Asian currency Crisis and in 2007 predicted the panic of 2008.

Hold onto your seat because it gets much worse as we view into his future predictions. The Dollar will lose up to 90% of it’s value. Wall Street will take over Washington in a bloodless Coup. More Wall Street Giants will fall. There will be a revolution, which will include Food Riots, Squatter Rebellions and Job Marches. This sounds like the breakdown of civilization to me and massive civil unrest like we have never before seen in this country. Celente predicts that this will be worse than The Great Depression. His final prediction is that America will become an Undeveloped Nation by 2012.

I was telling you folks many months ago to buy Foxfire books and learn to become self sufficient because those who are will be the only ones that will survive. People who are the most dependant will unfortunately be the first to go. We are I’m afraid to say about to see an era where only the strong will survive.

Russian Professor Says U.S. Will Break Up After Economic Crisis

    By Robin Stringer

Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) — A professor at the diplomatic academy of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the U.S. will break into six parts because of the nation’s financial crisis.

“The dollar isn’t secured by anything,” Igor Panarin said in an interview transcribed by Russian newspaper Izvestia today. “The country’s foreign debt has grown like an avalanche; this is a pyramid, which has to collapse.”

Panarin said in the interview that the financial crisis will worsen, unemployment will rise and people will lose their savings — factors that will cause the country’s breakup.

“Dissatisfaction is growing, and it is only being held back at the moment by the elections, and the hope” that President- elect Barack Obama “can work miracles,” he said. “But when spring comes, it will be clear that there are no miracles.”

The U.S. will fracture into six parts: the Pacific coast; the South; Texas; the Atlantic coast, central states and the northern states.

“Now we will see a change to the regulatory system on a global financial scale: America will cease to be the world’s regulator,” to be replaced by China and Russia, he said.

George Washington was to my mind the greatest American that ever lived. Beside my front door is a framed and glass-encased antigue ribbon, both sides of which thank our first president and wish him happy birthday. The silk, heavily embossed ribbon commemorates the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. It was bought by my great-grandfather.

All hail to George Washington, the father of our country!

Gravy plane (let them eat cake).

Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) — General Motors Corp., criticized by U.S. lawmakers for its use of corporate jets, asked aviation regulators to block the public’s ability to track a plane it uses.

“We availed ourselves of the option as others do to have the aircraft removed” from a Federal Aviation Administration tracking service, a GM spokesman, Greg Martin, said yesterday in an interview. He declined to discuss why GM made the request.

Flight data show that the leased Gulfstream Aerospace G-IV jet flew Nov. 18 from Detroit to Washington, where Chief Executive Officer Richard Wagoner Jr. spoke to a Senate committee that day and a House panel the next day on behalf of a $25 billion auto-industry rescue plan.

Representatives at the Nov. 19 House hearing including Democrat Gary Ackerman of New York faulted Wagoner, Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally and Chrysler LLC CEO Robert Nardelli for taking private jets to Washington to plead their case.

“Couldn’t you all have downgraded to first class?” Ackerman said.

“First class, thats for the little people, surely”

    Let my Turkeys go.

    LOL.

Should you buy a kosher turkey? Sure. Should you purchase a regular turkey and brine it? This might make your turkey more tasty than in the past, but the turkey would not be considered kosher for any Jewish guests who observe the Jewish Dietary Laws of kashrut.

  • Dialectic of Destruction of the Republic

The Judaic Dialectic utilizes the ideas we have been conditioned to think are normal, namely equal dialogue by left and right. This is nothing other than Hegelian dialectic. That is a mainstay of Marxist-Engelian Communism. This has nothing to do with revealed Truth nor with rule of law. First they propose one set of anarchic propositions and upheaval of law and society and then another. Finally they intend to bring it together as one totalitarian world state. In the end their purpose is to set up the rule of the Zionazi Antichrist from Jerusalem throughout the earth. Anathema to that.

Yes, life is a struggle between, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Nature has always removed the weak.

Have you ever tried working backwards?

Picture in your mind a perfect planet (ours)populated by perfect people.

All conflicts caused by, Race, Religion, Politics, class, ego, removed.

Just perfect people on a perfect planet.

    How can/will that be achieved?

At the moment we are still in the swamps of evolution, totally tribal.

We are our own potential Gods, if only we knew it.

A percussion grenade explodes. The boys, most no more than ten or eleven years old, scatter, running clumsily across the heavy sand. They descend out of sight behind a sandbank in front of me. There are no sounds of gunfire. The soldiers shoot with silencers. The bullets from the M-16 rifles tumble end over end through the children’s slight bodies. Later, in the hospital, I will see the destruction: the stomachs ripped out, the gaping holes in limbs and torsos.

Yesterday at this spot the Israelis shot eight young men, six of whom were under the age of eighteen. One was twelve. This afternoon they kill an eleven-year-old boy, Ali Murad, and seriously wound four more, three of whom are under eighteen. Children have been shot in other conflicts I have covered—death squads gunned them down in El Salvador and Guatemala, mothers with infants were lined up and massacred in Algeria, and Serb snipers put children in their sights and watched them crumple onto the pavement in Sarajevo—but I have never before watched soldiers entice children like mice into a trap and murder them for sport.

RE Socialist Republic…one could not be more crystal clear on our disposition in America…good column!

  • No Sky it does not. And nothing really comes even close to the democide numbers the Left has posted (though colonialism comes in second at around 60,000,000).

I wouldn’t call that a pittance by any stretch of the imagination; however, the Left certainly transcended it with Stalin’s 43,000,000, Mao’s 77,000,000, Hitler’s (yes Nsism was a by product of the Left) 21,000,000, and all the other leftist marxist and neo-liberal democides. Heck even ole Pol Pot managed to kill 1/2 the number of people as Genghis Khan. Though to be fair the Mongols throughout history have posted almost 30,000,000.

Compare this to the Crusades which school children are taught is one of the worst events in the history of the world at a measly 1,000,000 with the worst deceipt and barbarism of that number coming from the side of the Muslims (a fact conveniently omitted by the liberal (marxist) demagogues in charge of the public school brainwashing centers in this country.

Rudolph Joseph Rummel would say beware consolidated power, of course, but there is something to be said of beware the Left. Liberal facsim comes with a smile couched in a false morality for its justification but it really is powerfully toxic.
