By Patrick J. Buchanan
No, it is not 1860 again.
But with all the talk of the 10th Amendment, nullification and interposition, states rights and secession — following Gov. Rick Perry’s misstatement that Texas, on entering the Union in 1845, reserved in its constitution a right to secede — one might think so.
Chalk up another one for those Tea Party activists who exploded in cheers when Sister Sarah brought up the dread word in endorsing Rick Perry in the primary.
Looking back in American history, however, these ideas, these sentiments, decried as insane inside the Beltway, were once as American as “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.”
“I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical,” wrote Thomas Jefferson to James Madison from Paris in January 1787, about Revolutionary War Capt. Daniel Shay’s anti-tax rebellion in Massachusetts.
In the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions, both of these founding fathers sanctioned the idea that states could interpose their own sovereignty and nullify acts of Congress. Both were enraged by the Alien and Sedition Acts of John Adams and the Federalists, written into law to combat sedition during the undeclared naval war with France.
On taking office, President Jefferson declared the acts unconstitutional, refused to prosecute those charged and freed the imprisoned writers.
In 1814, Timothy Pickering, another veteran of the revolution and secretary of state to both George Washington and Adams, was a force behind the Hartford Convention, which argued for New England’s secession and reuniting with Great Britain. Massachusetts opposed Madison’s War of 1812 that had caused the British blockade that destroyed their trade and prosperity.
The war’s end and Jackson’s victory at New Orleans, however, aborted the Hartford movement and finished off the Federalists forever.
In 1832, it was Vice President John Calhoun who inspired South Carolina to vote to nullify the Tariff of Abomination that was killing the cotton-exporting South and enriching Northern manufacturers. To the chagrin of Madison, Calhoun invoked his and Jefferson’s Virginia and Kentucky resolutions in defense of Carolinian defiance.
In 1845, it was Massachusetts again. Ex-President John Quincy Adams declared that admission of Texas to the Union as a slave state might constitute grounds for secession and civil war.
With Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860 and Republicans, the Northern party, assuming power, South Carolina, Georgia and the Gulf states seceded.
But not until after Fort Sumter, when Lincoln called for volunteers to march south and crush the rebellion, did Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas secede, rather than remain passive or participate in a war on their kinfolk.
Unlike the issues of yesteryear that tore the Union asunder, Tea Party issues are not sectional but national. Yet, they are rooted in a similar set of beliefs — that the federal government no longer serves their interests, but the interests of economic and political forces that sustain the party in power.
In 1860, the South saw power passing indefinitely to a new regime, a Republican Party that represented high-tariff industrialists and New England radicals and abolitionists who despised the agrarian South and celebrated the raid on Harper’s Ferry by the terrorist John Brown, who had sought to incite a slave uprising, such as had occurred in Santo Domingo.
What called the Tea Party into existence?
Some are angry over unchecked immigration and the failure to control our borders and send the illegals back. Some are angry over the loss of manufacturing jobs. Some are angry over winless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some are angry over ethnic preferences they see as favoring minorities over them.
What they agree upon, however, is that they have been treading water for a decade, working harder and harder with little or no improvement in their family standard of living. They see the government as taking more of their income in taxes, seeking more control over their institutions, creating entitlements for others not them, plunging the nation into unpayable debt, and inviting inflation or a default that can wipe out what they have saved.
And there is nothing they can do about it, for they are politically powerless. By their gatherings, numbers, mockery of elites and militancy, however, they get a sense of the power that they do not have.
Their repeated reappearance on the national stage, in new incarnations, should be a fire bell in the night to the establishment of both parties. For it testifies to their belief and that of millions more that the state they detest is at war with the country they love.
The secession taking place in America is a secession of the heart — of people who have come to believe the government is them, and not us.
Obama’s problem, like the Bushes’ in 1992 and 2008, is that one thing these folks are really good at is throwing people out of power.

Secesion may be a bit extreme, but a legal means, be it the 10th Amendment or nullification, must be found to check the power of the federal government in areas where it has no business.
I am getting to be an old man, as I remember when I went to government schools they were run by the towns with some guidance, along with teacher certification, handled by the state.
I received a decent education, although nothing like the one given people 50 years my senior who graduated from high school knowing Latin and classic Greek.
Now, many students graduate without knowning their own tongue, English, despite the influsion over the years of billions of federal dollars into education.
It will be a blood bath in the Nov. elections.
The 2012 elections will be the same.
Throw out ALL incumbents and take your nation back people!!!!
And, ah, with whom will you replace the incumbents..?? This happens every 4 or 8 years and really makes no difference, so lets not be naive….
Rrddbb,
Say, how do you pronounce that screen name?
Anyway, I disagree that elections are the answer. If we hate the Democrats for piling up deficits, imposing amnesty for illegal aliens, endless wars, and propping up big business with our tax dollars, why should we vote for the Republicans? “Throw the rascals back in” isn’t a slogan that inspires real hope.
Resistance at the State level is the only real answer. State nullification of unconstitutional Federal laws, reasserting control over our State National Guards, and reclaiming delegated powers are the legal, moral, and necessary steps for restoring liberty and stopping an out-of-control Federal government.
The federal government needs to be reminded, at penpoint, that the states grant privileges and powers to the federal goverment, not the other way around. The states created and pay for the federal government, and the states can uncreate it if they so choose. Washington D.C. is an artificial and cute district created by the states to do paperwork not suited to the individual states, as such. This job can always be moved somewhere else, by the states.
Yes, but to do so would create such a crisis in confidence with the Federal Government both at home and overseas in a list of ways that it could AND probably would ruin U.S. government treaties, like military alliances, economic alliances and leadership-standing in the world creating what we barely averted 18 months ago. One of the reason’s FOR Federalism is to provide a single entity for foreign governments to deal with because NO one state OR collection of states is in any position to represent OR run the entire Federal Government. I realize that I have stated the obvious, but just because it’s in the Constitution doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best option. NO WHERE in the constitution does it outline the potential harm OR damage that maybe arise resulting from clipping the wings of the most trusted Government there is around the world.
Too often I am afraid people think they are ready for that pound of cure, without first seeking that ounce of prevention…
A COUPLE of ideas that WE (the people) get push-back on from POLITICIANS!
1) Campaign Finance Law reform-if you expect to gain control of this thing you better be able to control the money feeding the monster. K-Street and Billion dollar campaigns…
2) Term Limits- 30 years is too long, what about 6 years, OR 12 years in the House and Senate
“All countries are basically social arrangements. Within the next hundred years, nationhood, as we know it, will be obsolete. All states will recognize a single global authority. A phase briefly fashionable in the mid 20th century, ‘citizen of the world,’ will have assumed real meaning at the end of the 21st.”
Strobe Talbott
The Old South has now risen, and it is indeed the original United States of America, for the Founding Fathers were after all, Southern planters with a rebel cause.
This new insurrection, which is in the finest tradition of American rebellion, is the defining moment in American history, whereby the demonized South finally comes forth to save the Union from the carpet baggers of the “Yankee Nation” of international bankers.
What is transpiring in this Second American Revolution, is a secession from control of the nation’s money supply by the international bankers of the Rothschild central bank, which promised to destroy this nation in 1860:
“If that mischievous financial policy which had its origin in the North American Republic [i.e., honest Constitutionally authorized debt-free money] should become indurated down to a fixture, then that government will furnish its own money without cost. It will pay off its debts and be without a debt (to the International Bankers). It will have all the money necessary to carry on its commerce. It will become prosperous beyond precedent in the history of the civilized governments of the world. The brains and wealth of all countries will go to North America. That government must be destroyed or it will destroy every monarchy on the globe!”
- The Times of London newspaper, opinion-editorial commentary
This new revolt of the Confederated States of America, stands as a stark testament to the original American spirit, which cannot be crushed or redefined by the likes of Strobe Talbott, Zbigniew Brzezinski’, David Rockefeller and George Soros–to name a few who prophesize the eclipse of all nation-states in the so-called “New World Order” of the robber barons.
The Southern Cause has always been the American Cause. Now the Old Southern genteel Confederate spirit, will tip its hat to Abraham Lincoln:
“The Government should create, issue, and circulate all the currency and credits needed to satisfy the spending power of the Government and the buying power of consumers. The privilege of creating and issuing money is not only the supreme prerogative of Government, but it is the Government’s greatest creative opportunity. By the adoption of these principles…the taxpayers will be saved immense sums of interest [by not having to borrow from privately-owned corporate banks]…Money will cease to be master and become the servant of humanity. Democracy will rise superior to the money power.”
- Abraham Lincoln
“I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavour to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people (e.g., by pitting the cooperation-oriented political left against the competition-oriented political right), until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of the war.”
- Abraham Lincoln
It may not be the 1860’s, but this new revolt is a combination of the original Southern rebellion and the revolt of the counterculture of the 1960’s. Like the Southern revolt, the youthful revolt of the hippie era, was perceived as a threat to national security.
Nothing could have been further from the truth, as the original American spirit was always manifest in that rebellion of “flower power.”
The difference lies in perception, as now that generation known as the “Love Generation,” has finally blossomed and come to full fruition as the Second American Revolution. Like the Southern patriots, the counterculture has purged all negative elements and Marxist influences from the movement, which were a direct threat to the national security of the United States of America.
The old hippies have now entered the maturity of late middle age and with it the old naivete has dropped away–like stages of a rocket, piercing the firmament–to reveal the true cause of our youthful revolt. We came NOT to destroy this great nation, but to preserve it, by picking up the banner of our fallen fathers with whom we quarreled. We recognize our spiritual kinship with the original long-haired rebels who founded our nation. We are rebels with a cause; the American Cause. So let is be written, so let it be done.
The South has now risen like a phoenix and with it, the United States of America, as one people united against the wiles of the international bankers.
I stood in line at the pharmacy in an upscale neighborhood in South Orange County last night…..A well dressed young woman in front was asked by the pharmacist whether she would like generic brands… The woman replied “That would be fine, my husband recently lost his job and we have no insurance, and I’d like to update my address since we had to move as a result…” I spoke to two different people that same morning, one whose father had lost his job and moved in with his daughter, and another whose husband had lost his job and retirement…. My business was down 60% last year….
We should not have to live under this cloud. The answer isn’t found in the partisan whining of either party, most of whom these days appear to be caricatures of themselves, they think its a game…. They remind me of petty 6th grade schoolchildren who dispute everything incessantly, without remorse, facing no recourse….
Repubs. or Dems.?? ‘there’s really no difference…. The problem lies in the CORPORATE TAKEOVER of our GOVERNMENT and the corporate ethos of squeezing every last penny out of the dollar, whether by influence peddling, hiding profits, cheating on taxes, funneling money overseas, exporting plants overseas, hiring third world labor, outright thievery and lying, etc. And of course our government pushing us to consume, consume, consume the products and services of those who bought their seats, AND pick our pockets at the same time (No, I’m not a socialist. I’m a capitalist and have my own small business).
The “Greatest Generation” isn’t so because of WWII… They were great because on whole they were ethical, hardworking, family-centered, religious, moral and NATIONALIST… Us vs. them and not Inc. vs. us!!
Thomas;
Technically you are 100% right. They should be able to move and challenge the Federal Government by law on paper.
The lawmakers are now the law breakers and they have control of the guns and the military and the mercenaries (er-contractors); and I do believe they would roll out the troops to keep power. They did at the G -20 and they were not even close to the of dissent and numbers you are describing here.
They protested Tiananmen Square and they would conduct themselves in the exact same manner I fear – don’t be delusional. It would be a lock and load situation. There would be blood in the streets. It may come to just that.
As the curse states: May you live in interesting times.
We shall see how this plays out.
Pat is right on about the “Seccession of the heart”. The issue is that we live in a society today where media dominates and any talk of seccession gets you labeled as an extremist. When that happens, you end up spending most of your time explaining why you are not. We can never have any true reform by discussion seccession.
Also, we do need to throw all incumbents out. The issue as you all have stated is who do you put back in? Well, maybe we should put in a third party. If we are tired of the government and the two party system, why not elect a Constitutional Party Candidate or have a Tea Party Candidate emerge. It certainly isn’t a Sarah Palin. It needs to not be a Republican just stepping over to another party to get attention. It needs to be someons fresh. It also needs to be someone who is charismatic. Someone who can also debate well.
To be an ordinary citizen today is to be in a state of frustration and rage.
The formation of the Tea Party is the American voters way of showing their displeasure with Washington politics as usual. Representatives, voted upon by the general public, have campaigns that are also financially supported by special interest groups. The canundrum is that the special interest groups agenda will exert pressure upon the elected official as a means of repayment for their sponsorship which may not agree with the platform the public thought that they voted for. Until this change takes place, we will all be at the mercy of powerful special interest groups and representatives that are willing to sell their souls to the devil in order to gain elected seats.
Hopefully, in 2012 (God willing the Myans will be proved wrong), we will see a change in the political election process to limit financial contributions and stronger monitoring of ethical standards.
Vickie, the corrupt trash will soon be taken out, the corrupt media ranting and raving all the while.
The SCAM of the CENTURY is the Export of the US Industrial Base. Elites in Wash DC, some of whom are imbeded in the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, have implemented this heist, while “conservatives” such as John McCain have slept.
Secession is an interesting reaction to this travesty, but one impossible to execute.
The Intellectual Focus of Conservatives should be on the inherent flaws in the snake oil known in economics classes as “comparative advantage.” This fictious theory has been used to destroy the American economy, create formidable economic competitors in Asia, and transfer trillions of American assets to foreign interests.
Just as the Federal Government is now burdened with crippling debt, US industry has been ravaged by those that make their living through its destruction. That consists of an ingrown and interwoven network of New York Investment Banks, the Council of Foreign Relations, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other self-serving intellectuals.
For their own pecuniary interests these groups have been transfering the wealth of the US economy and its working people to foreign interests and competitors.
i find it outrageous that people say elections don’t matter. if you want one hundred million third worlders in our nation, the right to murder your children to be the law of the land, infringement on the second amendment, and the B.A.T.F.E. and homeland security terrorizing the people, then you must vote for a democrat. on the other hand, if you love one hundred million third worlders in your nation, the right to murder your children because they’re inconvenient, infringement on the second ammendment by aristocrats who are all defended with machinegun toting security, and the B.A.T.F.E. and homeland security calling you domestic terrorists, then you should most definitely vote for a republican. and if you ever find yourself on the verge of committing the thought crime of thinking those two choices seem oddly identical, then real fast yell out, “we are a thousand points of light!” and then, “YES WE CAN, YES WE CAN, YES WE CAN!”
A lot of very thoughtful comments here. It is tough being in one’s 20’s and relatively new to the real political truths of our time. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be at times for gentlemen like Mr. Buchanan who’ve been engaged in the struggle for America traditions, daily, for so long.
To Mr. Buchanan and those of you who have been engaged in this struggle for so many years, stay strong and healthy in heart and mind, and know that young people are beginning to hear the message. It is a painfully slow process to be sure, but I see signs there is an awakening occurring. It seems like an unscalable mountain, but your perseverance shows that is a climb worth making.
A decent article by Pat as usual…….and it’s intresting to read “Generational Thinking” for the most part? If you are under the age of 40, you may strugle with this question, simply because your school teachers lied to you.
“WAS I BORN INTO A BETER NATION THAN THE USA THAT I LIVE IN TODAY”? (Only for US born.)
Absolutely Yes!……….For us older Americans…….We watched history vs reading bad history. And historial revisionism is the only thing that can save the younger generations from the lies that they were taught. Understand that the War of 1776 was nothing more than PC/PR for the New Englanders that have continued to ruin this vast nation through their whiney, European/Jewish influence!…Were it not for Napoleon in Europe, we would have been crushed like a bug!….We became a nation in the less publisized war of 1812 when the “Rothschilds” wrote a check to recolonialize America after they had disposed of Napoleon. That’s the real history, with the burning of our Capital, Hurricanes and Tornados on Biblical proportions, one sniper that changed everything at the Battle Of Baltimore, and Southerners in New Orleans killing damn near every Brit that showed up! Andrew Jackson always knew that he was fighting the “Rotschilds” and continued in his Presidentsy…….Study the “Old Souths Reconstruction Period”?……………..You ain’t seen nothing yet!
I just love Dr. Clyde Wilson’s perspective on history.
“The Yankee Problem In America.”

I agree with many of the comments posted here but don’t expect the tea party movement to be of any help. As we speak it’s being co-opted by the neoconned GOP, phony Sara Palin leading the charge. As some of you have mentioned what’s needed is a 3rd party that truly represents WE THE PEOPLE; the problem is to a) make it a viable party and b) prevent it from being taken over by the same anti-American interests that control the D’s and R’s. Any suggestions on how to do this?
Seccession…..It’s too broke to fix. America is sick of the Northeast telling everyone how to be an American, with a bone thrown to LA California, and Chicago from time to time. The Confedracy was a good idea, where a Civil War is when two apposing sides fight for control of the Government. The CSA simply wanted to go in peace, recognizing each other’s borders and distinct cultures. It wasalways “These United States” and not “The”……………After destroying the agriculture society of the South, these parasites have now destroyed the industrialized North for the benefit of Wall St. Bankers, and immigrated the West back to Mexico!……What’s next?…..Seccession.
What could cure this thing, honestly with another form of Government. Our system of elections & government with the House and Senate routine, and an independent executive branch just does not work in an environment of insincerity and non-debate. A Parliamentary form of Government is much MORE suited for “THE FIGHT,” a Parliament is not set in stone to elect the house every two years, replacing one third of the Senate every two years, and the President every four years. Our system of government is absolutely NON-responsive to public sentiment, to the needs of the people.
PARLIAMENT can be tossed as many times as the people feel is necessary until they get what they are looking for, and when things are going well they can continue to vote Conservative as many times as they like in order to keep them in power, but take right now in the U.S., we could have changed the Government from Liberal to Conservative had we wanted to in a Parliament, and in 6 mos if we became unhappy again with the group in power we could switch it again.
See, our politicians (both parties) only want to stay in power so they can keep their good paying jobs with their nice Health insurance policies, most people in the house and Senate are at OR approaching the age when health insurance is very important… You think that isn’t a consideration for those people to keep their cushy jobs these day’s?
Our form of Government (a Republic) is based on a calender, not on the time sensitive needs of the people. There is NO incentive for our elected officials to work on behalf of the people so long as they can raise the money on a predetermined time schedule to keep being elected! That Supreme Court decision just provides MORE of a safety blanket for politicians with greater Corporate funding…
We need to toss the Republic OUT, and bring in a Parliamentary style Government. Out system worked when the Politicians respected the form of Government the Founders put in place for them, but that just isn’t so any more. 200 filibusters in 4 years? Every bill requires a super majority??? What ever happened to majority rule? 51% WINS any election…
Suggesting that we once again, “throw the rascals out” in the upcoming election is the equivalent to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The system is completely broken because corruption, like cancer, has eaten away at what used to be “our brain”. Years ago Pat said we as a nation were ‘in the ER room’ and ‘could the patient be resucitated?’ Today, the patient died and the family members are merely rolling the corpse around in a wheel chair. Let’s bury it, and start anew.
Stars….good to see you and good post.
Yes, The U.S. was given the “Last Rites” and the American people are fighting for their “Last Rights”.
Clever Fran, I like that!
I cannot respect this movement because these people gravitate to the empty headed Yaa-who like their hero, AND dropout Governor Sari Palin who screeched when asked the innocuous question, “what do you read” that the question was an ambush by the Liberal media, they just give me a headache with their skin-deep sincerity. The idea that ANYONE could take Sari Palin’s answer at face value for WHY she was leaving office nearly 2 years early as a way to be fair to the Alaskan people people because everyone knows that private citizen Palin will be much more productive NOT BEING the Gov during that last lame duck year in Office, than to be IN office… Huh? That’s what she said…
For any of you who did not shake your head’s And ask WHO IS THIS idiot upon such a pronouncement, then you deserve her and all of the stupidity that comes with her.
The woman didn’t know what happened in the Century in which she was born, didn’t know about WWI-WWII-Korea, Vietnam, OR anything else for that matter, she thought Africa was a Country, and attended college to become a television Sports reporter, which she failed at. Since when did what makes sense become an enemy of the people, like a top notch education, a track record of success, the ability to discuss complex issues (we live in a complex world), but this idiot Palin is running around now spewing nonsense about Obama playing the War card in 2012??? Get out of here! Now, there is NO CHANCE that woman will ever make it to the Republican nomination, but the shear fact that her incompetence is being embraced gives me a splitting headache, because that tells me NOBODY is home on the other side.
The tea party people are a good 9 years TOO LATE when it comes to fiscal responsibility, because NOW is when classical economic theory tells the Government it is your time to Borrow and spend to rescue the economy and create jobs since the capital markets are seated comfortably on the sidelines with hands in pocket’s, that spending is paid back once your economy recovers. But the Tea Party is completely out of phase ready to kill this nations chance for recovery.
Sarah Palin and Rick Perry (incumbent governor of Texas) are being groomed for the 2012 presidency. Perry has sold out Texas to the globalists (e.g. Texas “corridor”), goes to Bilderberg meetings (a federal crime), created new taxes as governor, including a 2.7 billion dollar energy tax he is now trying to phase in, and has targeted his constitutionalist Republican apponent, Debra Medina, for dirty tricks, according to an insider source. Ron Paul and Alex Jones are also being targeted by him and his handler, Karl Rove, the master of dirty tricks and a very dangerous man.
http://www.propagandamatrix.com/articles/february2010/021710_dirty_tricks.htm
Sarah Palin and Rick Perry, the incumbent govenor of Texas, are being groomed for the 2012 neo-con ticket. The groomers loved the way Palin divided the nation in 2008, as this supports the left-right paradigm in America — which is their game.
Palin went to Texas this month to support Perry’s reelection. Perry has sold Texas out in exchange for the presidential shot — has supported the Texas “corridor” (very important for the Bilderberg agenda), increased taxes, attended Bilderberg meetings (a felony), and is now targeting his constitutionalist apponent, Debra Medina, ofor dirty tricks. We’ll have to wait and see what Karl Rove, his handler, and a master of dirty tricks, comes up with along these lines. Perry has also mentioned Ron Paul and Alex Jones as “people who need to be stopped.”
Ah, well that didn’t take long, did it? “Plane crashes into Austin office building” today. Very good, Karl. Blame it on the tea-party. But this op is going to blow up in your face, too, like all the others since Christmas because the media megaphone you hold is losing juice, has been losing juice for quite a while now. People know where to get their news today, and its not from the TV or newspapers. You and your globalist friends should have done this AFTER you closed down the internet, not before.
…………………………..
The only crime in the US Constitution is levying war against the US & the stated purpose of militias is to suppress insurrections.
President George Washington personally lead the combined militias from Pennsylvania and Virgina in the field to put down the Whiskey Rebellion.
Not playing overseas like Jefferson, Sam Adams dealt with the reality of Shay’s Rebellion:
“Rebellion against a king may be pardoned, or lightly punished, but the man who dares to rebel against the laws of a republic ought to suffer death.”
