Pat Buchanan is more than a conservative\u00e2\u20ac\u201dhe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Nixon meets Spengler.<\/em><\/p>\n

Patrick J. Buchanan stood beside a window in Chicago\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Conrad Hilton<\/strong> hotel during the 1968 Democratic convention and looked over the panorama of dissent raging below. At about two in the morning, the phone rang\u00e2\u20ac\u201dit was Nixon. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Buchanan, what is happening there?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I said, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcListen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Buchanan recalls, then pantomimes how he stuck the phone out the hotel window. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153All you could hear was \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcF-you Daley! F-you Daley!\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going on,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he told Nixon, and hung up. He smiled taking it in.<\/p>\n

Later the police, tired of the verbal abuse being hurled at them, charged into the park and at the protestors, looking for a brawl. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The cops shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have done it,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Buchanan, remembering the savage way they beat the demonstrators. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But the country saw the pictures of cops racing into the park. And the country was with the cops.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

The continental plates of America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s politics were grinding into new positions beneath Buchanan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s feet. That shift tilted ethnic whites and eventually Southern evangelicals into the Republican<\/strong> coalition, awarding the party five of the next six presidential elections, including two 49-state victories. In a phrase crafted by Buchanan, Nixon called it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the great silent majority.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Buchanan prefers to call it the New Majority<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the generalizations of political history, Buchanan\u00e2\u20ac\u201das a wordsmith and veteran of two Republican<\/strong> White Houses\u00e2\u20ac\u201dis lumped with the broad postwar conservative movement. Since the Cold War<\/strong> ended and that movement degenerated into a set of interlocking cliques, he has been identified more finely as a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153paleoconservative.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The man who wrote incendiary editorials on Goldwater\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s behalf for the St. Louis Globe Democrat<\/strong>, who attends Latin Mass<\/strong> regularly, and who injected the term \u00e2\u20ac\u0153culture war\u00e2\u20ac\u009d into the heart of political discourse is certainly a conservative. But that label is incomplete.<\/p>\n

In media, he is the pioneer pundit. Sean Hannity<\/strong> and scores of others from all political backgrounds learned the trade from him. His three-hour radio show with Tom Braden<\/strong> evolved into a television program and later spawned \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Crossfire\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The McLaughlin Group.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d But few other columnists or talking heads match his depth. If a cable news program is on in the background and you hear the words \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Agincourt\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the snows of Canossa,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d it is Buchanan, inevitably, speaking them.<\/p>\n

But he is not just a media figure, either. In that time of tumult before the 1968 election, National Review publisher Bill Rusher<\/strong> asked Pat, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Are you Nixon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ambassador to the conservatives, or are you our ambassador to Nixon?….<\/p>\n
