By Patrick J. Buchanan

As George W. Bush famously asked, “Is our children learning?”

Apparently not in the twin capitals of liberalism, D.C. and New York.

The Trial of the Century and the Long Shadow of 9/11

by Justin Raimondo – AntiWar.com

antiwar-comA weird concatenation of events – the Ft. Hood shoot-up, the decision by the Obama administration to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other 9/11 plotters, and the seizure of a mosque and other properties said to be owned by a front for the Iranian government – has once again brought the question of domestic terrorism to center stage. This underscores a remarkable fact: that the 9/11 attacks, even more than the Japanese strike at Pearl Harbor, have influenced, even dominated, our domestic politics as well as our foreign policy. We are still standing in the long shadow of that event, and nothing, it seems, can haul us out of the dark and back up into the light.

Shining Light on Roots of Terrorism

By Ray McGovern  – ConsortiumNews.com

Media commentary on the upcoming 9/11 trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has raised concern that state secrets may be divulged, including details about how the Bush administration used torture to extract evidence about al-Qaeda.

“I think that we’re going to shine a light on something that a lot of people don’t want to look at” is how American Civil Liberties Union attorney Denney LeBoeuf put it, according to The New York Times on Saturday.

Obama’s Betrayals

by Sheldon Richman – Future of Freedom Foundation

obama-changeAfter President Obama announced he would fight the release of photographs showing American soldiers abusing “war on terror” detainees, Richard Haass, president of the quintessentially mainstream Council on Foreign Relations, said that Obama had learned the difference between campaigning and governing. He wasn’t being sarcastic.

It was said during the presidential campaign that one of the candidates was running for George W. Bush’s third term. Did you think it was Obama?

Obama has been doing a lot of “growing” in office. That’s the term the establishment uses when a candidate who apparently holds maverick views gets into office and abandons those views in favor of views more congenial to the permanent ruling elite.

Former UK Ambassador: CIA Sent People To Be ‘Raped With Broken Bottles’

By Daniel Tencer – Raw Story

imgThe CIA relied on intelligence based on torture in prisons in Uzbekistan, a place where widespread torture practices include raping suspects with broken bottles and boiling them alive, says a former British ambassador to the central Asian country.

Craig Murray, the rector of the University of Dundee in Scotland and until 2004 the UK’s ambassador to Uzbekistan, said the CIA not only relied on confessions gleaned through extreme torture, it sent terror war suspects to Uzbekistan as part of its extraordinary rendition program.

Eager to Tap Iraq’s Vast Oil Reserves, Industry Execs Suggested Invasion

by Jason Leopold – TruthOut

imgTwo years before the invasion of Iraq, oil executives and foreign policy advisers told the Bush administration that the United States would remain “a prisoner of its energy dilemma” as long as Saddam Hussein was in power.

That April 2001 report, “Strategic Policy Challenges for the 21st Century,” was prepared by the James A. Baker Institute for Public Policy and the US Council on Foreign Relations at the request of then-Vice President Dick Cheney.

In retrospect, it appears that the report helped focus administration thinking on why it made geopolitical sense to oust Hussein, whose country sat on the world’s second largest oil reserves.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

By Patrick J. Buchanan

For the Blue Dogs, Tuesday was a fire bell in the night.

Virginia Republicans led by Robert McDonnell crushed the most conservative Democrat nominee in decades, rolling up a victory that rivaled Ronald Reagan’s rout of Walter Mondale.

A Court Decision That Reflects What Type of Country the US Is

By Glenn Greenwald – PuppetGov.com

TortureIt’s not often that an appellate court decision reflects so vividly what a country has become, but such is the case with yesterday’s ruling by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in Arar v. Ashcroft (.pdf).

Maher Arar is both a Canadian and Syrian citizen of Syrian descent.  A telecommunications engineer and graduate of Montreal’s McGill University, he has lived in Canada since he’s 17 years old.  In 2002, he was returning home to Canada from vacation when, on a stopover at JFK Airport, he was (a) detained by U.S. officials, (b) accused of being a Terrorist, (c) held for two weeks incommunicado and without access to counsel while he was abusively interrogated, and then (d) was “rendered” – despite his pleas that he would be tortured — to Syria, to be interrogated and tortured.

Barack Obama Continues Bush Administration Policy Regarding Posse Comitatus

by Joe Wolverton, II – The New American

Bush-ObamaIt has been just over one year since the U.S. Army announced that the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team was being placed under the direct control of the US Army Northern Command (NORTHCOM), and was being indefinitely reassigned as an “on-call federal response force” for emergencies of all sorts, natural and man-made, including terrorist attacks, within NORTHCOM’s area of responsibility — the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Although the assignation went mostly unheralded at the time, it marked the first time in the history of the United States that an active unit of the regular Army was placed under the immediate and exclusive command of NORTHCOM.

Obama’s Latest Use of “Secrecy” to Shield Presidential Lawbreaking

by Glenn Greenwald – Salon

What was once depicted as a grave act of lawlessness — Bush’s NSA program — is now deemed a vital state secret.

The Obama administration has, yet again, asserted the broadest and most radical version of the “state secrets” privilege — which previously caused so much controversy and turmoil among loyal Democrats (when used by Bush/Cheney) — to attempt to block courts from ruling on the legality of the government’s domestic surveillance activities. Obama did so again this past Friday — just six weeks after the DOJ announced voluntary new internal guidelines which, it insisted, would prevent abuses of the state secrets privilege. Instead — as predicted — the DOJ continues to embrace the very same “state secrets” theories of the Bush administration — which Democrats generally and Barack Obama specifically once vehemently condemned — and is doing so in order literally to shield the President from judicial review or accountability when he is accused of breaking the law.

The Fruits of Intervention

By Patrick J. Buchanan

If we had it to do over, would we send an army into Afghanistan to build a nation?

Would we invade Iraq?

While these two wars have cost 5,200 dead, a trillion dollars and a divided America facing an endless war, what have we won?

Unemployment: Now That's Sustainable!

by Darren Weeks – NewsWithViews.com

Every time the media reports the unemployment numbers, it reminds me of George Orwell’s book, 1984. In the legendary book, a governmental organization referred to as the “Ministry of Truth” would report through the telescreens that the price of chocolate was going down. Winston Smith, the lead character of the book, knew good and well that the price of chocolate was not going down but was actually going up. We are certainly living in Orwell’s world! The difference between ours and the fictional world of Orwell, is that we are not being propagandized about chocolate, but rather unemployment statistics. The controlled news media always attempts to “butter up” the bad numbers, by putting a positive spin on the fact that we are losing our jobs, month after month.

Rethinking World War III

by Justin Raimondo — AntiWar.com

World War III

Our spooks stopped Bush from bombing Iran, but can they stop Obama?

In 2007, just as the Bush administration was hyping the alleged “threat” from Iran’s ostensible nuclear ambitions – and facing renewed pressure from the Israel lobby to go after Tehran – the CIA issued a National Intelligence Estimate that punctured the War Party’s balloon. The NIE, which represents the considered opinion of all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, averred that we knew with “high confidence” Iran had abandoned its nuclear weapons program in 2003 and not restarted it.

British High Court Rejects U.S./British Cover-up of Torture Evidence

Glenn Greenwald — Salon

There is a vital development — a new ruling from the British High Court — in a story about which I’ve written many times before:  the extraordinary joint British/U.S. effort to cover up the brutal torture which Binyam Mohamed suffered at the hands of the CIA while in Pakistan and while he was “rendered” by the U.S. to various countries.  While Mohamed, a British resident, was in American custody, the CIA told British intelligence agents exactly what was done to him, and those British agents recorded what they were told in various memos.  Last year, the British High Court ruled that Mohamed — who was then at Guantanamo — had the right to obtain those documents from the British intelligence service in order to prove that statements he made to the CIA were the by-product of coercion.

A Historian’s Account of Democrats and Bush-Era War Crimes

by Glenn Greenwald – Salon

Just remember this was all done with an overwhelming Democratic majority in both houses of Congress and a Democratic President elected on a promise to usher in “an unprecedented level of openness in Government” and “a new era of openness in our country.” There’s no blaming Republicans for any of this…

Three Heroes of 9/11 Die of Cancer in Five Days

by Stephanie Gaskell — NY Daily News

Ed. Note From Wikipedia: [Christie Todd] Whitman appeared twice in New York City after the September 11 attacks to inform New Yorkers that the toxins released by the attacks posed no threat to their health. On September 18, the EPA released a report in which Whitman said, “Given the scope of the tragedy from last week, I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington, D.C. that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink.” She also said, “The concentrations are such that they don’t pose a health hazard…We’re going to make sure everybody is safe.

Lawyer Blasts ‘Congressional Depravity’ on Guantánamo

by Andy Worthington — AntiWar.com

In a recent article, “On Guantánamo, Lawmakers Reveal They Are Still Dick Cheney’s Pawns,” I spelled out my despair and disgust at lawmakers from both parties (their names can be found here, here and here), who, since May, have voted for legislation severely curtailing President Obama’s ability to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba by his self-imposed deadline of January 22, 2010, and who, as a result, have sent just one resounding message to the American people and the wider world: the ghost of Dick Cheney still stalks the corridors of power.

What Do Neocons Have To Do With Obama?

By Jacob Bronsther — Christian Science Monitor

President Obama may be a pragmatist, but he’s now in charge of two fundamentally neoconservative wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

The US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are fundamentally “neocon” wars. They were shaped by the neoconservative belief that American military might can replace rogue regimes with Western-style democracies that won’t threaten US security.

Today, these wars are being led by a commander in chief, Barack Obama, whose views on foreign policy amount to a polar opposite of neoconservatism.

The neocons’ grand ambitions are now in the hands of a pragmatist.

President Obama: Give Peace a Meeting!

By Cindy Sheehan — Op-Ed News

Since you took office, 125 of our irreplaceable young have been killed in what you called a “dumb war” in Iraq and 223 in what I call the “other dumb war,” Afghanistan….

President Obama,

I know that you are only fulfilling your campaign promises to increase the violence in Afghanistan and Pakistan and I notice that not a significant amount of troops have been withdrawn from Iraq. However, even with your hostile rhetoric and promises to escalate the violence, many people voted for you because they believed you were the peace candidate.

Another War in the Works

by Paul Craig Roberts — Op-Ed News

As there is no legal basis for action against Iran, the Obama regime is creating another hoax, like the non-existent “Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.” The hoax is that a facility, reported to the IAEA by Iran, is a secret facility for making nuclear weapons…

Does anyone remember all the lies that they were told by President Bush and the “mainstream media” about the grave threat to America from weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? These lies were repeated endlessly in the print and TV media despite the reports from the weapons inspectors, who had been sent to Iraq, that no such weapons existed.

September Surprise – Iranian Nuke Facility Revelation: Countdown to War Begins

by Justin Raimondo –  AntiWar.com

Iran has the right to the production of peaceful nuclear power under the terms of the NPT, a treaty the Israelis refuse to sign. Why are they being held “accountable,” and not the Israelis? Everybody in the Middle East knows the answer to this question – as they do in Washington, although the rules of political correctness won’t permit them to utter it…
