This article is utter crap. Where is the proof that industry execs suggested invasion? The referenced report did not as it is claimed here indicate "that the United States would remain “a prisoner of its energy dilemma” as long as Saddam Hussein was in power." I imagine no one (including Mr. Buchanan) took the time to actually read the report, so here are some selected quotes:
"Review policies towards Iraq with the aim to lowering anti-Americanism in the Middle East and elsewhere, and set the groundwork to eventually ease Iraqi oil-field investment restrictions.
Goals should be designed in a realistic fashion, and they should be clearly and consistently stated and defended to revive U.S. credibility on this issue. Actions and policies to promote these goals should endeavor to enhance the well-being of the Iraqi people. Sanctions that are not effective should be phased out and replaced with highly focused and enforced sanctions that target the regime’s ability to maintain and acquire weapons of mass destruction."
Wow, pretty dark huh? The evil CFR actually recommended that we drop sanctions that didn't work and instead focus on sanctions meant to deprive Hussein of any ability to make WMDs, even going so far as to raise the well being of the Iraqi people. One can easily see how this was interpreted as an elitist mandate for an invasion. Or not.
There is nothing wrong or sinister about investments in oil fields. Oil is a necessity. And if the price of oil goes through the roof at the whim of a dictator, this can do serious harm to the world economy. In and of itself, this is obviously not a justification for a war. And this report didn't argue for one.

Mr. Buchanan, I'm as pissed off as anybody that we invaded Iraq only to find there were no WMDs. I'm pissed off that Bush scared the daylights out of people in order to justify an invasion. I'm pissed off that dictators can take their time while our country is stuck on a 4 or 8 year election cycle. But this report didn't recommend an invasion to make oil companies richer. It's not a smoking gun. I think a good percentage of the American population is now stuck in a state of disbelief, wanting desperately not to be fooled again. They now rush to embrace any story that claims to reveal a deception, no matter how bogus. This kind of story just takes advantage of that.

This is absolutely despicable and makes me furious. The way the government manipulates the people to suit its own agenda makes me sick.
