Buried in the editorial page of the Nov. 16 Wall Street Journal was a remarkable essay, which exposes the true, and hidden, story of who is really “underrepresented” in our elite schools, and who are the real victims of ethnic bigotry in America.
The author is Ron Unz, a Harvardian 20 years ago, now a California political activist and entrepreneur, who led the successful state initiative to abolish bilingual education.

No matter how devoutly Republican leaders may wish it were so, the issue of life is not going away. Last week, ever so gingerly, the U.S. Catholic hierarchy steered itself toward a direct, public confrontation with pro-choice Catholic political leaders.
By 217-30, the bishops conference issued “Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics.” “As chief teachers in the church,” they declared, “we must … explain, persuade, correct and admonish those in leadership positions who contradict the gospel of life through their actions and policies.”

Not since Ollie North rocked the Iran-Contra committee back on its heels has a congressional witness done more in a single day to turn the tables on his accusers.
Last Thursday was the triumph of Ken Starr, a scene set for him by history, and he played it beautifully. It was Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. By his demeanor, character and reasoned responses, through 10 hours of often-obnoxious hectoring, Starr gave the lie to the hacks, shysters and shills who have smeared him as some out-of-control Puritanical prosecutor obsessed with sex.

In the tiny West Virginia town of Weirton, population 22,000, thousands marched last week to save Weirton Steel, the heart of their community. If the steel plant goes under, and its 4,400 workers lose their jobs, the town dies. It is as simple as that.
What is threatening Weirton Steel and every other steel plant in the USA? In a word, imports, which in August equaled 35 percent of U.S. steel consumption, up 50 percent from a year ago.
Who is dumping into our market to save their steel industries by killing ours? Japan, South Korea, Russia, Indonesia and Brazil.

At least the media are consistent.
When Republicans win, the media urge the GOP to “reach out” to the left to bring the country together. When Republicans lose, the media admonish the GOP to move to the left or face extinction. The post-election advice is always the same: Abandon your conservative base, and come follow us.
These folks seek a system where both parties answer to their whistle. With the Democrats already in their pocket, they want the GOP to climb in. Then, the media can serve as tutors to the nation. What they resent most is a party that ignores them and follows its own drummer.

According to the pundits and exit polls, the American people want it over with. They are fed up with hearing about Monica and Bill and Kathleen and Ken. “Enough already!” they are saying. What normal person does not share that sentiment?
But while the desire to have this squalid episode brought to a swift conclusion is understandable and can be accommodated, the matter cannot end here and now. We must go onto the finish. For this is no longer about President Clinton; it is about America.

“Sometime this summer, the post-Cold War world ended. It was a brief, giddy age. We were thrust into it headlong barely 10 years ago, when the Berlin wall cracked, Eastern Europe freed itself and the Soviet Union disintegrated. Suddenly, the United States became not just the sole surviving superpower but the repository of the sole surviving ideology. Countries all over the globe fell over themselves to embrace capitalism, democracy and the American way…”
Thus does Fareed Zakaria, managing editor of Foreign Affairs, house organ of the Council on Foreign Relations, begin a lament in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine.
