Could Unchecked Illegal Immigration Lead to the Dissolution of the United States?

Pat Buchanan thinks so. The controversial pundit and former presidential candidate made his case at a sold out speaking engagement at the Media Theater Sept. 26.
“We’re in danger of the break up of the United States of America,” said Buchanan as he spoke with Big Talker 1210 AM Host Michael Smerconish on a brightly lit stage. “All Americans want these borders closed and it’s time Washington did it. People think we’re white guys distressed over their diminishing role. That’s not true. I grew up in a town that had 400,000 black folks and 400,000 whites, but we’re all Americans.”
Buchanan spoke as part of Smerconish’s book club. His newest work “State of Emergency” examines the problems associated with illegal immigration, and the government’s policy towards it. After an interview with the morning radio host, the 67-year-old took questions from an audience of several hundred people.
The war in Iraq, economic policy, and a proposal to build a wall across the Southern border were also discussed.
Buchanan pointed out flaws in the current immigration system including the concept of “sanctuary cities” and “catch and release.”
Buchanan said Houston, Texas is one of a number of cities where police are not allowed to ask people about immigration status. This allows many with criminal records to skirt by authorities, according to Buchanan.
Buchanan cited the example of a Houston Police officer who was killed by a suspected member of the gang MS-13, which originated in El Salvador.
Under the federal government’s program of “catch and release,” Buchanan said, many illegal immigrants are able to defy federal law because of the policy.
“We catch them; release them into the population and tell them they must show up in court,” said Buchanan. “Three fourths don’t show up.”
Buchanan also addressed the idea that immigrants do jobs American citizens won’t do. He mentioned industries such as landscaping, food services, and others where there is a high number of illegal workers.
“Seventy four percent of people doing landscaping are Americans,” said Buchanan.
He said the influx of foreign workers drives down wages for low skilled or unskilled American born workers.
“[Illegal immigrants] work hard, many of them are good people,” said Buchanan. “The point is they are not Americans and they broke the law.”
Bill Barletta, the Mayor of Hazelton, Pennsylvania, got applause from the crowd after Buchanan introduced him as a special guest. The leadership in that town has 24 law suits currently filed against it for enacting and enforcing local laws that prohibit businesses from hiring illegal immigrants and landlords from renting to them.
Barletta said the actions were prompted by a flood of migrants that was burdening the town’s social services and reducing quality of life.
“In the year 2000, the school district’s budget for English as a Second Language was $500,” said Barletta. “Now, it’s $595,000.”
Buchanan spoke and answered questions for almost two hours. Then fans lined up for a book signing.
Capt. Phillip Peche of the U.S. Marine Corps and his wife Abigail who now live in Villanova, came to see Buchanan for the first time. They said they are concerned about immigration issues because of personal experiences.
“[My husband] just spent two deployments in Iraq,” said Abigail Peche. “We used to live in Camp Pendelton in San Diego.”
Peche said illegal immigration there had caused a strain on San Diego schools, hospitals, and other institutions.
On the Iraq war, Buchanan said he believes American troops are currently “over extended” there and that he opposed President Bush’s decision to invade.
“I was impressed,” said Phillip Peche of his feelings of Buchanan.
A former speech writer and aid to presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Regan, Buchanan said he advocates punishing business owners and corporations who hire illegal immigrants, as well as reform of the immigration system as a whole.
