PJB: Can This Marriage Last?

Having savaged each other for a year, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have now formed a rare partnership in power. Not since James Garfield chose James G. Blaine has a new president chosen his principal rival to be secretary of state.
What does this tell us?
First, don’t take campaign oratory all that seriously.
Second, unlike Dennis Kucinich, Ted Kennedy, Ron Paul or Jesse Helms, Hillary and Barack are pragmatists. They do not let ideology or past insults get in the way of a mutually beneficial deal.
But this is not some Hitler-Stalin pact of American politics.
Dick Morris has it right. As in a parliamentary system, where Cabinet members come straight off the majority party front bench, Barack, as prime minister, is knitting together a coalition government that allocates its highest honors to its greatest stars.
As Tony Blair named rival Gordon Brown as chancellor of the exchequer, Barack made Joe Biden his vice president, Hillary his secretary of state and Bill Richardson his secretary of commerce. Had John Edwards not fouled his nest, he, too, would be in the Cabinet. Perhaps attorney general.
And while Barack has taken a risk naming Hillary, with her national following and ruthless courtiers, Hillary’s investment is even greater. Should a clash erupt, as it did between Ronald Reagan and Al Haig, Barack, though at great cost, can terminate her and her career. The idea that a cashiered secretary of state could challenge President Obama in 2012, capture the nomination and win, after humiliating and dumping our first African-American president, is absurd.
And the Clintons know it. Absent divine intervention, Obama is the nominee in 2012. Hillary has to know this is likely her last chance to make history. Thus she seized the offer of State, and Bill agreed to go the Full Monty on his financial relationships.
What does this marriage of convenience, with Biden, Bob Gates and Gen. Jim Jones as ushers, mean for U.S. foreign policy?
Methinks the antiwar left has the crying towel out too early.
Our new decider’s heart is still on the left. Moreover, his political interests argue for relegating to the trash bin of history a Bush-neocon policy of endless war until the Middle East resembles the Middle West. America cannot sustain the wars that Bush’s policy produced, nor those it promises.
Look, then, for Obama to make a large, early down payment on his pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat brigades from Iraq within 16 months. Though the Status of Forces Agreement accepted by Iraq doubles the time Obama has to pull out, to December 2011, the nation, not just the left, wants out, with but a single caveat: America does not want a Saigon ending.
What happens after — whether Shia attack Shia, or join to crush Sunnis, or Arabs engage Kurds — is not a war Americans are willing to intervene in with any new surge of U.S. troops.
About Afghanistan there is a gathering consensus that victory over a resurgent Taliban with a sanctuary in Pakistan’s border region cannot be achieved without an infusion of U.S. troops this country is unwilling to support.
Escalating the war means more air strikes that have alienated the Afghan people as well as President Kharzi. More Predator strikes in a Pakistan where anti-Americanism is rife and the government is besieged hardly seems a promising policy.
What is the U.S. bottom line in Kabul? Not the impossible dream of a democracy modeled on our own but a government committed to keeping al-Qaida out. Given the bloody beating the Taliban have taken for seven years, they may be amenable to such an arrangement.
But the first test of the Obama-Clinton team may be Iran.
Tehran claims its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has never declared it in violation of the non-proliferation treaty. Yet, the suspicion is broad and deep in Washington and Tel Aviv that Iran is hell-bent on building an atom bomb. Obama and Hillary have both said that will not happen, no matter what it takes.
If war with Iran is to be averted, the new team must move swiftly to talk to Tehran and put its cards on the table. It is here that the potential for a split between Barack and Hillary is greatest.
If Likud’s “Bibi” Netanyahu wins the Israeli election, he will push hard for U.S. air strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, and push back against any Obama deal with Tehran. With the Israeli lobby and a Jewish community that gave Barack 80 percent of its votes, plus the neocons and Evangelical right calling for strikes against Iran’s nuclear sites, would the Obama-Clinton team stand united — against war?
Would Hillary, a former senator from New York who relied even more heavily than Barack on Jewish contributions and votes, stand by Barack if the two disagree on whether the survival of Israel is at stake?
On second thought, the antiwar left is right to be nervous.

By choosing Hillary, Obama has put his political interests ahead of international concerns. Hillary has no experience in foreign policy and doesn’t have a diplomatic bone in her body. Male-dominated Middle East nations will not take her seriously. If American men couldn’t stand her, middle eastern men will hate her radical feminist snot-nosed fat-assed self. She may no longer be ideologically radical feminist but she has that imperial Big Sister style.
Worse, she’s always been blatantly and obviously devious, not deviously devious, what a secretary of state needs to be–if he’s to be devious at all. Actually, a straight arrow Sec of State is best; Schulz was better than Kissinger. But, if deviousness is called for, Kissinger had it down pat.
He oozed with charm and brilliance; he made cold seem warm. Hillary is intelligent but reptilian cold. Look at her eyes and tongue. She’s lizard woman. No one around the world is gonna show nurse ratched any respect.
Obama should have chosen someone for the whole world, but he simply made a political choice, a very bad one at that. He chose Hillary for his own political reasons than for the good of the nation–or the world.
This marriage WILL last PJB, providing that … after Obama puts an absolute end to “perceived” torture (i.e. waterborarding), shuts down Gitmo, as well as, any and all surveillance programs … we do not get hit by terrorist on our own soil.
If we do … then Hillary resigns and cleans his clock in the 2012 primaries.

There has to be a marriage before it can last. I’ve been reading that, due to a Constitutional mandate that prohibits any existing official to aspire to an office which the pay grade has been raised during their tenure in office, that Hillary may not be able to accept the position. Apparently however, this has been side stepped in the past by Congress making the pay raise not applicable to the specific position.
Otherwise, I think the marriage will last. Any rival contention we may have seen, I agree, was probably just campaign contention. The shadow government is very particular about things running smoothly.
Pat you are right, the first test for Obama/Clinton unity will be Iran. We need to look at how much Obama and Clinton needed that Jewish vote and contributions to their campaigns, along with the lobbies and neocons calling for strikes and more sanctions against Iran. Now let’s add Emmanuel into this question, and we have a real problem. Striking Iran would be devastating for the US, as with openly aiding Israel if they chose to fight their own war, but we all know the latter will happen. Let’s just hope and pray Obama will cease to disappoint, at least me, and stick to his beliefs on the situation with Iran and other policies.

Great points. But there’s a big problem - you attack Iran then Obama risks everything that we have gained with Iraq. Engagement with Iran, normalization of diplomatic ties and free trade is ideal.
Why not flood their market with American goods and then get their oil instead of giving it to the Europeans and Chinese?

If we could put a severe embargo on Iran like we did Iraq but then sell them American made goods very cheaply even at cost they would end beholden to us and to a large extent simply do what we tell them to do much like we will be doing what China tells us to do in the future unless we change what we are doing.

I hope we attack Iran, and it triggers off a world crisis. Look, Bush’s crazy Iraq plan gave power to the Dems. If Obama messes up big time in foreign policy–which will affect us here as well–, it means his regime is going down–along with rest of the Dems. Lenin exploited WWI to bring forth the revolution. Liberals exploited Bush Nicholas II’s war in Iraq to get a stealth radical Marxist in the White House. We need the Obama regime to fail–economically, diplomatically, etc.
We don’t want this guy to succeed. There is a carryover effect in politics. If Obama does well in A and B, people will think even the C, D, E, and F are good about him. This will lull all of us toward his brand of socialism. We must make him fail in every area.
Obama doesn’t know crap about foreign policy. Neocons pushed Bush into a war he couldn’t handle and brought down the GOP. Pray that the likes of Rahm and AIPAC push Obama into a war with Iran. No, not a ground war as I don’t want US boys dead. But, let them go for air strikes and let it trigger off a region-wide conflict, and we shall see what happens. The world will instantly turn against Obama and see him as just another AIPAC puppet. The anti-war left will be demoralized. Muslim nations will call him a whole bunch of names. Africans will still support him because he’s black, which will lead to a African-Arab divide.
Most likely, Iran will end up with nukes anyway. Obama will seem the fool. The Messiah will be embroiled in a mess. Pray that Obama has a series of Bay of Pigs. Let him totally mess with the Iranian Missile Crisis.

Andrea Freiboden: You hope that we will go to war with Iran and that it will precipitate a world crisis. I have news for you. We are already in the midst of a world crisis thanks to nearly eight years of G.W. Bush and his Republican lackies. And you say if Obama messes up big time it will bring his administration and all the Dems down. Then what should we do? Vote the Republicans back in? Why not just swallow cyanide and get it over with quickly.
One of the reasons that I voted for Obama is that I was convinced that if McCain were elected, we would be at war with Iran within the first six months of his administration. Why else do you think that Joe Lieberman was following McCain around like a dog in heat?
At least Obama knows better, having sat at the knee of Rev. Jeremiah Wright who probably has a more sophisticated understanding about what is going on with AIPAC and the politics of the Middle East than anybody in the Republican Party save Patrick Buchanan. Barack Obama: The economy’s going to get worse before it gets better
The U.S. economy suffered its worst monthly job losses since 1974, data showed today, as President-Elect Barack Obama warned the situation was going to get worse before it gets better.
The new data underscores the depth of the global financial crisis which this week prompted a slew of interest rate cuts worldwide.
Payrolls were cut by 533,000 - much worse than the forecast for a reduction of 340,000 jobs.
Market reaction was immediate, with shares, oil and the dollar falling, and U.S. Treasury prices leaping.
Today oil fell to below $45 a barrel, with expert predicting it could plummet as low as $25 if the global recession reaches China.
“These are horrendous numbers… This is an economy that is in absolute free-fall right now. Confidence has collapsed,” said Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at Global Insight.
Yes, the exceptionally poor jobs report come out today and the stock market rallied…mm go figure. We are in deep do-do as I warned months ago. It is predicted that our government will collapse by spring. Very, very rough times ahead.

You realize that Jeremiah Wright hates this country, white folks, and conservatives, right?
Necons and other cons who supported the war may have been foolish but they are still pro-Americans. Wright is just plain anti-American. He denounced this country during the Cold War too. He blamed people like Reagan for creating and spreading AIDS in Africa. Ayers also opposed the war, so should we applaud him too as a wise friend/advisor to Obama?
Sometimese, people on the right and the left may agree on policies, but we have totally different worldviews and principles. Anti-war rightists opposed the war for pro-American reasons. Anti-war leftists opposed it for anti-American reasons.
Just because Buchanan and Jesse Jackson agreed on NAFTA issue doesn’t mean that we should regard Jackson as a good American. He’s slime.
Also, let’s not kid ourselves. This Iranian problem isn’t simply a matter of Israeli or Zionist interests. A nuclear armed Iran really is a problem. Once Iran has nukes, it can mess around the region, and we won’t be able to do shi* because Iran can always threaten us with… “if anyone gets in our way, we’ll go nuts and use nukes”. No, I don’t think Iranians are nuts and want to use nukes, but they can pretend to be nuts once they have the nukes. And, we won’t be able to do anything about it.
I’m not for a ground war or occupation. But, air strikes on Iran would certainly make things interesting. It will make things worse for both US and Iran. Iran will suffer major infrastructure damage and Obama will face major controversy over the world and a problem he won’t be able to solve. I’m hoping for the worse because we need to bring Obama down. FDR had a ’successful’ presidency and we got stuck with the New Deal forever. Obama wants to push radical programs, and his presidency is deemed ’successful’–and the media will back him all the way–, we’re gonna be stuck with the Screw Deal forever. Obama must fail big.
His weakness is foreign policy, and it would be a boon to us if he messes up(but,it will mess Iran up too, which is good for us). It won’t be good for the US in the short-term, but it will be good in the long term. Carter’s foreign policy hurt US in the short-run, but it led to rise of Reagan who won the Cold War. If Obama succeeds, it will be good for the US in the short-term but bad in the long run because it will open the door to more socialism. Also, if Obama succeeds, the leftist crowd is gonna say, ‘look how US benefitted so much from a person of color. Diversity is so great. Let’s bring in 50 million more people-of-color immigrants since the age of the white male is over’.
Also, Obama’s global welfare notions are gonna rob us. He wants to take 90 billion of our dough and give it to Africans every year forever. Obama says he’s a ‘global citizen’. What is that shi*?
Okay, maybe Bush and neocons were pigheaded with the war and all that, but Obama’s apologetic blame-America-first policy is worse? An America that appears weak is gonna embolden our enemies. Clinton mostly had a hands-off policy in the 90s, and some good that did. Terrorists saw us as wussy and attacked us over and over… until it led to 9/11.
McCain was not for a war with Iran. He was for tough measures on Iran. Also, war with Iran must be an option, if only as a part of strategy. US declaring ‘no war under any circumstances’ will lead Iran–and other rogue nations–to do it pleases. Our policy should be, ‘we don’t favor war and we want a peaceful solution BUT, if push comes to shove, there may be war’. Without that element of threat, Iran sees only the green light to do what it wants. Reagan hit Libya with missiles in the 80s, and Gaddaffi took a major dump and started behaving. I know that Iran is tougher, but let Iranians know that air strikes are a possibilty. One that we don’t prefer but one that is possible.
McCain was the right guy to handle this. He was right about the surge. Had he been president, he would have managed the Iraq War much better than Bush. McCain is a serious man, something Bush is not. And, McCain has certain principles, which Obama does not. Obama has ideology and opportunism. And, Obama feels contempt for the US, white folks, conservatives, and etc. He looks upon white males as dweebs who should just give it up and start looking up at the black man as the alpha male master of America. And, enough dorky white boys bought into this jiveass notion. Most white boys who voted for Obama are dorks like Chris Buckley. Yuppie NPR listening crunchy con nimmies or beavis-n-butthead paleocons with IQ of 70. Like that lowlife traitor Scott McConnell. I know Bush was bad. But, how can any conservative support anti-American stealth Marxist Obama, friend of Wright and Ayers, over McCain, a war hero who fought for this country and went through hell in the Hanoi Hilton? During the Cold War, McCain was right there next to the gipper. In the 80s, Obama was hanging with Wright and other lowlifes. His inspiration was Saul Alinsky. He saw himself as Soul Alinsky. He saw Reagan as an old evil white guy–and still does. In his campaign, he blamed the whole economic mess on Gipper’s policies. He insults our hero and our philosophy, and YOU VOTED FOR OBAMA!!!!????

Pat, if you think things are going to play out in Afghanistan and Iran the way you just described, you’re living in a dream land. It’s only a matter of time before some terrorist detonates a nuclear device, and when that happens, all hell is going to break loose. And although I have no beef with Jews or Israel, no one except for Israelis and other Jews care much about what happens to Israel. Our alliance with Israel was important during the Cold War, but no longer. Everything now is about nuclear terrorism. Barack Obama, as slick a politician as he is, doesn’t know his butt from a hole in the ground, and he’ll just stand there doing nothing when it happens. If the people around him don’t react forcefully, someone else will. Truthfully, it doesn’t matter who the president is when WW3 starts.
Obama cannot legally throw Hillary out of the country, but making her SOS (Sec Of State) is as close as he can get. LOL

Bush reported to be drinking heavily

(WMR) — With less than two months remaining in office, George W. Bush, witnessing a devastating defeat for the Republican Party, worse favorability ratings than those of Richard Nixon at the height of the Watergate scandal, and the most devastating economic situation since the Great Depression, is reported by a number of well-placed sources in Washington as drinking heavily.
After having tried to explain away the collapse of several Wall Street brokerage houses by saying, “Wall Street got drunk,” it appears that it is Bush who is suffering from bouts of drunkenness.
According to informed sources who spoke to WMR, Bush was visibly drunk at the recent G-20 economic summit in Washington and at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, Chinese President Hu Jintao, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper were among the world leaders who had the chance to witness an inebriated Bush both at the G-20 and APEC summits.
WMR has long reported on Bush’s heavy drinking. On July 31, 2007, WMR reported: “WMR has learned that the January 13, 2002, incident in which President Bush claimed to have choked on a pretzel and passed out briefly was a cover story designed to divert the media’s attention away from Bush’s heavy drinking. A well-placed White House source has confirmed a previous account of another well-connected White House source that Bush had been drinking while watching a Sunday NFL playoff game between Baltimore and Miami.
The White House nurse on duty examined Bush after he passed out from drinking at around 5:35 pm and took a blood sample ostensibly to check his blood sugar levels. The blood sample reportedly showed Bush’s blood alcohol content at a level considered to be legal intoxication.
Bush fell from his couch bruising his cheek and cutting his lip. His eyeglasses also cut the side of his face. Bush blamed the incident on his failure to heed his mother’s advice and chew all his food before he swallowed.”
On June 6, 2005, WMR reported: “A well-heeled Republican donor to the Republican Party was very frank about George W. Bush’s mental and physical condition. New Rule Lifts Ban On Firearms In National Parks

WASHINGTON — People will soon be able to carry concealed, loaded guns in most national parks and wildlife refuges.
The Bush administration said Friday it is overturning a 25-year-old federal rule that severely restricts loaded guns in national parks.
Under a rule to take effect in January, visitors will be able to carry a loaded gun into a park or wildlife refuge — but only if the person has a permit for a concealed weapon and if the state where the park or refuge is located also allows concealed firearms.
The new rule goes further than a draft proposal issued last spring and would allow concealed weapons even in parks located in states that explicitly ban the carrying of guns in state parks. Some states allow concealed weapons but also ban guns from parks.
“If you can carry (a gun) on Main Street, you are allowed to carry in a national park,” said Chris Paolino. a spokesman for the Interior Department.
The Interior Department rule overturns a Reagan-era regulation that has restricted loaded guns in parks and wildlife refuges. The previous regulation required that firearms be unloaded and placed somewhere that is not easily accessible, such as in a car trunk.
Assistant Interior Secretary Lyle Laverty said the new rule respects a long tradition of states and the federal government working together on natural resource issues.
The regulation allows individuals to carry concealed firearms in federal parks and wildlife refuges to the same extent they can lawfully do so under state law, Laverty said, adding that the approach is in line with rules adopted by the federal Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. Those agencies let visitors carry weapons consistent with applicable federal and state laws.
The National Rifle Association hailed the rule change, which will take effect next month before President-elect Barack Obama takes office.
“We are pleased that the Interior Department recognizes the right of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families while enjoying America’s national parks and wildlife refuges,” said Chris W. Cox, the NRA’s chief lobbyist.

Hillary would be Barack’s vice-president if she hadn’t made that dumb remark late in the primary season about Robert Kennedy. Nobody on Barack’s team wanted to talk about it (then or now) because they didn’t want to call attention to the idea that she alluded to (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m sorry, but it’s too touchy a subject to spell out even now). As Pat mentioned, Barack could end Hillary’s career by firing her, and that’s exactly what I think he’ll do. It’s only a matter of time before she says or does something that he’ll be able to use as his excuse. If he fires her after a year or two, her opportunity to effectively challenge him in 2012 will be greatly diminished. One might think that this whole scenario is too farfetched to think that he would plan that far ahead, but consider this: 1)the country is going to hell in a handbasket, and Barack WILL be blamed for it, and 2)who else but Hillary is the logical Democrat to challenge him for the nomination? Forget about the Republicans. They’re history. The new world order has no place for them, especially after the financial crisis that they primarily created through their hideous greed. Rich white Republicans are the current ogres of humanity. If you’re white, you might want to reproduce with someone of another race. That way, your kids might have a chance to succeed, and not just get spit on.

More than 90 lorries supplying Western forces in Afghanistan have been set on fire in a suspected militant attack in north-west Pakistan, police say.
Police said at least one person was killed as more than 250 gunmen using rockets overpowered the guards at a terminal near the city of Peshawar.
Some of the lorries were laden with Humvee armoured vehicles.
There have been a series of attacks on convoys recently - although not on this scale, says the BBC’s Martin Patience.
The road from Peshawar to Afghanistan is a major supply route for US and Western forces battling against the Taleban.
A US spokesman, Lt Col Rumi Nielsen-Green, said the incident was “militarily insignificant”. (SHE WOULD)

Apparently the District of Columbia expects quite a crowd of heavy drinkers and compulsive eaters for the inauguration of Barack Obama next month.
With speculation that this inauguration on Jan. 20 could attract millions of excited visitors to the nation’s capital, the D.C. Council enacted a special urgent law in recent days to allow any place with a liquor license — that’s also nightclubs and restaurants — to serve food 24 hours a day for four days around Jan. 20.
And to serve booze three hours longer, until 5 a.m.
That’ll run from Jan. 17 until the morning of Jan. 21. So get there early and get busy.
The legislation was the brainchild of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, which normally only gets extended hours on New Year’s Eve.
It was deemed “emergency legislation” because members want time for advance bookings.
But the bill did not go unchallenged. Many civic leaders are angry over a lack of council consultation on the sudden proposal and the impact on residential neighborhoods and streets of abundant all-night alcoholic revelry.
Phil Mendelson, a Democrat who’s chairman of the council’s Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary, worried over the criminal, violence and drunk driving consequences of extra bipartisan drinking, whether by celebrating fellow Democrats or inconsolable Republicans.
“I know a lot of people are excited about the inauguration,” Mendelson said, “and I share that excitement. But there are very few people I know of out partying at 5 in the morning or 4 in the morning who aren’t getting drunk.”

Gang-related murders have more than doubled in Mexico so far this year as powerful drug cartels battle for territory.

Organised crime killings rose by 117% to 5,376 in the first 11 months of 2008, compared to 2,477 in the same period last year.
The figures, announced by Mexico’s attorney general, were the first to provide a total number for drugs murders.
The spike in “homicides related to organised crime” were tied to a falling out between members of the Sinaloa cartel, the most powerful in Mexico, according to Medina Mora.
And the attorney general predicted that the violence could get worse before things improve in 2009.
A wave of killings, massacres and beheadings started at the beginning of 2008, when the Beltran-Leyva gang split from the main wing of the cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

It’s pretty obvious that BHO & HRC made a deal late in the primary season that resulted in her becoming SoS. That’s really the only explanation, as she’s not qualified for the job and brings huge negatives with her everywhere she goes. Bill Richardson was the obvious choice for Sec. of State, but apparently he doesn’t have enough star power or something. (His scandals & failures are pretty negligible compared to most others.)
Now Obama has to deal with the photo ops of Billary in foreign capitals, and the inevitable scandals that will arise. If he really wanted to keep her in check, leave her in the Senate. She could actually help the Administration from that spot, shepherding through bills that fit hers & his ideals.
Eventually, she’ll uncork one of those grand lies, like being named after Edmund Hillary, and it will be embarrassing for all. (In fairness, she was just saying what her mother told her, and there was a lot of sniper fire in the delivery room as she spiraled out of the birth canal.)
Heck, we’ve had a run of Sec. States that weren’t qualified for the job (Condi should have been ambassador to Russia, Powell should have been SecDef, Albright & Christopher were credentialled cartoon characters), so why not continue the trend?
